Bolivia's Death Road - DARE TO RIDE

June 2024

Hi people and travelers! It's great to have you back for a new weekly travel letter!

Today we are going to talk about one of the biggest adventure activities here in La Paz, the Death Road.

When I was working as a travel guide in South America, one of the most thrill-filling adventures for travelers was the Death Road here in La Paz, Bolivia. It was probably one of the activities that people debated the most about whether to do or not. At the same time, those who chose to do it always put the adventure on their top list of things to do and explore in South America.

Yes!! the road got its name for a reason

The road, officially known as Yungas Road, earned its name due to its extremely dangerous conditions, including narrow paths, steep cliffs, and lack of guardrails, which have led to numerous fatal accidents. Today, a new, safer road has been built to connect La Paz and Yungas, which is why the real Death Road has very little traffic,  it's mostly filled with brave travelers and bikers.

Of course, the name can make some people hesitate, but even though it was one of the most dangerous roads, it is also an extremely beautiful road with incredible views. You start your tour high up in the Andes, where there is almost nothing growing, and continue down to the amazingly green jungle. If you are scared of heights or have never biked in your life, you might want to think twice. Otherwise, go for it, but always with a lot of carefulness and respect for yourself, the road, and other bikers, and it will be an amazing memory for life.

A small Death Road checklist

Choose a Reputable Tour Company

Safety Equipment: Ensure the tour company provides high-quality safety gear, including helmets, gloves, and knee pads.

Bike Condition: The bikes should be well-maintained with good brakes and tires suitable for the terrain.

Guides: Experienced guides are essential. They should be knowledgeable about the road, first aid, and emergency procedures.

Prepare Physically and Mentally

Physical Fitness: Although the ride is mostly downhill, it's still physically demanding. Be in good physical condition to handle the long ride.

Mental Preparation: The road is narrow with steep drops, so it's important to stay focused and calm. Listen to your guides and follow their instructions closely.

Follow Safety Protocols

Ride Carefully: Maintain a controlled speed, especially around bends and narrow sections. Always keep a safe distance from other riders.

Stay Alert: Be aware of your surroundings, including other riders, vehicles, and potential hazards like loose gravel or wet patches.

Hydrate and Fuel Up: Keep hydrated and have snacks to maintain your energy levels throughout the ride.

When tackling the Death Road in Bolivia, it's crucial to prioritize safety and preparation.
