san juan the coldest night of the year

June 2024

A new travel letter from the Andes is coming in! I am super happy you are here, reading to get even more out of your trip to La Paz, Bolivia. And if you are not here or planning to arrive anytime soon, you still get some information and inspiration about this magical place!

La Paz is getting colder, and the supposedly coldest night of the year is coming up this Sunday, June 23rd

San Juan

Until not many years ago, people would make fires all around the city to celebrate this cold night. Today, that's forbidden, but what is very much allowed is to gather up with friends, in warm clothes, and eat hot dogs together

While enjoying these cold nights in La Paz, we want to show you 3 places not to be missed

National Museum of ethnography and folklore

This museum is a perfect indoor destination to escape the cold and immerse yourself in Bolivian culture and history. It showcases a rich collection of artifacts, including traditional textiles, masks, and pottery. The exhibits provide insight into the diverse ethnic groups and cultural heritage of Bolivia. It's a great place to learn about the traditions, rituals, and daily lives of Bolivian people while staying warm.

Mi Teleférico (Cable Car System)

Mi Teleférico offers a unique way to explore La Paz from the warmth of a cable car cabin. This extensive urban cable car system provides breathtaking views of the city and surrounding mountains while keeping you sheltered from the cold. You can hop on various lines to travel between different parts of the city, experiencing the stunning landscape and vibrant neighborhoods from above. Each station is equipped with amenities and often features interesting architecture and artwork. It's a comfortable and scenic way to see La Paz without braving the chilly weather outside.

witches market

Check out this video about the Witches' Market, where you can also make a small mini fire but for different purposes.

Enjoy san juan at our traditional restaurant

In our Bolivian restaurant, Tambo, we have been creating a special offer for the last weeks of June where you can enjoy Bolivian hot dogs with traditional beer. Also, ask for our Bolivian table games to sit down and enjoy time together while the nights outside can go down to under 0 degrees.
