valentine’s day is here: the most romantic spots in la paz

February 2025

Welcome to a new travel letter from La Paz, Bolivia!

I hope you're all doing great especially this week with Valentine’s Day coming up!

This day can bring all kinds of feelings, depending on where you are in life right now.

But before diving into Valentine’s traditions and different ways to celebrate in La Paz and around the world, I have to share the most exciting news of the week!

For months, I’ve been working on a travel e-book, packed with all the must-know tips for when you arrive in La Paz for the first time.

It also answers the most common questions travelers have asked me over the years.

Writing it has been my late-night side project, and the design process, together with Karen in Café del Mundo, took time because we kept pushing it aside for other priorities. But now, this beauty is here, and I love it!

Most of all, I hope you find it valuable and that it helps make your trip to La Paz and Bolivia even more amazing!

✨ If you’re planning to visit soon, let the book inspire you.

✨ If you’re already here, use the tips to explore.

✨ If you’ve already been and are back home, download it, reminisce, and maybe even realize there’s still so much more to see, so you just have to come back! 😉

Whether you celebrate it or not, it’s always fun to see how different traditions evolve around the world!

When I arrived in La Paz almost 15 years ago, Valentine’s didn’t feel like a big thing here. But now? It has become huge!

That said, in Bolivia, the biggest day to celebrate love is actually September 21, known as Día del Amor y la Primavera. This day is not just about romantic love, it’s also about friendship, the arrival of spring, (and the celebrating of good students and great doctors!), a kind of a mix!

It’s the main love celebration of the year, but February 14 is catching up fast! Bolivians love a good celebration, and if something can be celebrated, they will do it in style!

If you’re in La Paz on the 14th or the days around, you’ll see streets filled with flower sellers, cute gifts, red hearts, and oversized teddy bears everywhere.

Valentine’s Day in La Paz & Around the World

The other day at Café del Mundo, I met a Korean couple who are staying in La Paz for a while.

They asked me about things to do and upcoming events in the city, and naturally, we started talking about Valentine’s Day.

They told me that Valentine’s in Korea is celebrated a little differently, on February 14, women give chocolates to men, and one month later, on March 14 (White Day), men return the favor with gifts.

Basically, women have to wait a whole month to see if they get something in return, interesting, right? Listening to their story made me curious about how other countries celebrate, and let me tell you, there are some really cool traditions out there!

If you're in La Paz on February 14, here are some great spots to celebrate whether you’re with your partner, friends, or treating yourself to a self-love moment!

Where to Celebrate Valentine's in La Paz

Celebrate in Your Own Way!

Even if you celebrate or not, with someone or not do what feels best for you.

Celebrate with a friend.

Buy yourself a gift.

Cook something special for people you love.

At Café del Mundo, we always have a Valentine’s deal, whether you’re a couple, two friends, or a whole group!

And since experience gifts are becoming more popular, like in Sweden, we love the idea of giving the gift of an unforgettable moment rather than just things.
